David Troice (Born 1990) is a Mexican-American artist based in Mexico City, whose art is focused on the creation of steel origami sculptures inspired by the geometry and physics of the universe. Influenced by the work of Escher, Vasarely, and Kapoor, Troice’s work challenges the viewer’s perception of space and dimensionality.

Troice meticulously folds and assembles steel sheets into complex, three-dimensional forms, creating works that are both elegant and durable. His sculptures are a study in precision and patience, requiring careful planning and execution to achieve the desired effect.

Troice is fascinated by the way that seemingly disparate phenomena, such as the spiral patterns of galaxies and the hexagonal shapes of beehives, can be explained by the same mathematical principles.  His process of folding steel into complex geometric shapes is a way of discovering those hidden structures that underlie the natural world.

Ultimately, Troice seeks to push the boundaries of what is possible, both in terms of form and function, and to create works that resonate with people on a deep and meaningful level. Through his work, he invites the viewer to explore the endless variations of the universe and to contemplate the mysteries of existence.

Troice pursued a degree in industrial design in Mexico City before transferring to Boston to complete his studies, combining industrial design with sculpture, earning a BFA in 2015. This interdisciplinary academic background provided him with a strong foundation in design principles and techniques while fostering his artistic exploration. He has since showcased his work in various exhibitions throughout Mexico, the US and Europe.

“I specialize in creating steel origami sculpturers that explore the beauty and complexity of our world. My pieces reflect the interplay of light, shadow, and texture, as well as the delicate balance between structure and chaos… My work is a celebration of the interconnectedness of all things, and an invitation to explore the infinite possibilities that arise when we approach life with a spirit of curiosity and wonder.” - David Troice.

Geometric Curves

Troice employs the art of parametric origami, skillfully crafting a mesmerizing collection of geometric sculptures that exhibit a nuanced interplay of light and shadow within their multifaceted structure. By applying various finishes, including a sleek matte black, an opulent matte gold, and a reflective mirror surface, each piece undergoes a captivating metamorphosis, imbuing it with unique significance and allure.

The sculptures' forms undergo a seemingly magical transformation, deftly shifting and evolving in response to the observer's perspective, underscoring the profound role of vantage point in shaping one's perception. Troice's work emphasizes the individuality of each viewer's experience, affirming that how we perceive the world is, indeed, deeply personal and ever-changing.

Reminisce

David Troice’s inaugural steel origami sculpture, Reminisce, captivates viewers with its symmetrical folds, subtly portraying the interplay between shadow and light. It serves as a reminder of life’s inherent balance, where moments of triumph and adversity coexist harmoniously. Through the depths of its shadows, and the radiance of light, Reminisce encourages contemplation on the equilibrium of life, highlighting the duality of existence and the eternal dance of yin and yang.

Dissecting Light

Troice delves deeply into the multifaceted world of light and color gradients, examining their interaction with his sculptures. He employs an experimental approach that leverages both reflective and white surfaces, all while exploring an array of angles to achieve his artistic vision.
